[HOMESTRETCH] More than Cloud 9: Surfing and tourism in Siargao
2026-03-08 - 10:04
SURIGAO DEL NORTE, Philippines – Surfing is one of the best showcases of what sports tourism can achieve. The culture that surrounds it is a reminder that sports is not confined to courts and arenas, but lives in the Philippines’ landscapes, culture, and stories. In Siargao, it brings together people, discovery, and discipline. As the World Surf League brings international competitions to the island, the local community is able to meet global travelers and young athletes find new dreams to pursue. This episode goes back to Siargao in a conversation with Andi Eigenmann, Philmar Alipayo, and their 6-year-old daughter Lilo about how the island shapes their family life. We also talk to John Carby, Technical Director of sports management company SDMI Sports, and Ty Sorati, WSL Asia-Pacific Tour Director, about why organizing international competitions in Siargao is important. The two also share insights on how the Philippines can grow its surfing community and make Filipino surfers international champions. Homestretch aims to tell the stories of people who inspire us with their struggles and triumphs, and the places that help define our spirit as a nation.
