Is the tote bag the most democratic bag? We asked Rappler staff about their picks

Tote bags might just be one of the most democratic items in anyone’s closet. Almost everyone owns at least one — regardless of budget and style — and they’re used in ways that feel both practical and personal. This ubiquitous piece is seen almost everywhere — carried in offices and classrooms, stuffed with grocery items, filled with novelties from a weekend fair, or simply tucked as a “just in case” bag inside another bag. What makes them interesting is that, unlike those bags you use for specific occasions, tote bags are neither strictly fashion nor utility. They sit in that in-between space where everyday life happens. And in that sense, a tote is almost a quiet record of someone’s routines. A bookstore tote suggests you’re a reader, a gym tote shows how you like to move, and a free event tote says something about the subcultures you belong to. It’s a simple item, but it ends up telling about one’s daily life and interests potentially more than other accessories do. That’s also what makes tote bags surprisingly good conversation starters. Ask someone what tote they use most, and you’ll rarely get a generic answer. With that in mind, we asked Rappler staff to share their go-to tote bags — the ones they reach for, and why these made it into their regular rotation. JULIAN CIRINEO, BRANDRAP EDITOR “For function, I usually go for a MUJI jute bag or a UNIQLO canvas tote. The MUJI jute bags are really handy because they look polished but are still affordable. They’re like elevated shopping bags with no loud branding, and the larger sizes can fit a lot. If I’m carrying randomly sized items, I just grab a big one and throw everything in. MUJIPH.COM 🛒 Muji Jute Bag The UNIQLO canvas tote is similar in that it’s roomy, but the material is thin enough that I can fold it and keep it inside another bag. I usually use it as a backup shopping bag. UNIQLO.COM/PH 🛒 Uniqlo Canvas Tote Bag For style, my go-to is Straightforward totes. I like the material and the shape they use. They’re especially good when I’m bringing documents because the structure is flat and sturdy, so papers don’t get bent.” SHOPSTRAIGHTFORWARD.COM 🛒 Straightforward DVL Presto CHAU MORALES, CONTENT PRODUCER “Whenever I go to art conferences, I can’t resist sneaking in a tote bag purchase. One of my absolute favorites is matsining’s ‘I Am in My Own Season’ tote. I even got a discount because it was the last stock when I dropped by. It’s been my go-to bag ever since. INSTAGRAM.COM/MATSINING 🛒 matsining tote bag For chill days or hangouts with friends, I prefer totes that are just the right size for my essentials, like Artwork tote bags. The designs — whether quirky, cute, witty, funny, or grungy — are artsy and fun. ARTWORK.PH 🛒ARTWORK Weekend Drive (Tote Bag) And as an A’Tin myself, I also enjoy walking along with my 1Z Entertainment tote bag. I feel like I’m an inch closer to my SB19 bias, Josh Cullen. 1Z ENTERTAINMENT 🛒1Z Shopping Bag ANICA BORROMEO, CONTENT PRODUCER “Mine would have to be The Paper Bunny tote bag. I carry a 16-inch laptop with me almost all the time, and it’s honestly a struggle to find a bag that fits it without looking too utility-ish. The Paper Bunny works because it does the job and still suits most of my outfits. THEPAPERBUNNY.COM.PH 🛒 Puffer Shopper Another favorite is this vintage Ralph Lauren leather tote. It used to be my mom’s — I think I borrowed it from her closet once and just never returned it (haha). It’s special to me because it’s sturdy, fits a lot, and still works even with dressier outfits. Bonus that we’ve had it since the 2000s.” VESTIAIRE COLLECTIVE JELOU GALANG, CONTENT PRODUCER “I love Miniso’s tote bags. My favorite is the one I bought in 2022, adorned with the Little Green Men from one of my favorite film franchises, “Toy Story.” INSTAGRAM.COM/JELOU.GALANG It has long earned my trust in being an easy-to-carry companion for errands involving long walks or just casual hangouts — apart from being affordable and having just the right size and weight, it also features a zipper! While this exact favorite isn’t available anymore, you can spot other tote bags at the store that can subtly (or loudly) show your childhood fandoms just as much.” 🛒 MINISO Sanrio characters Fruit Series Shopping Bag (Kuromi) Taken together, these picks show how tote bags adapt to the way people live. More often, it’s about fit, function, and a bit of personal attachment — whether it’s from your mother’s closet, a favorite film, or a fandom — which might explain why almost everyone has one but no two are used quite the same way. — Rappler.com
