The Green Report: Going solar in the Philippines
2026-03-20 - 06:20
MANILA, Philippines – More Filipino households are shifting to solar power to lower electricity costs. While the conversation about solar power has become more mainstream now — evolving from years past when solar was once a niche topic — the solar industry remains fragmented. Government programs like net-metering are still plagued by bureaucratic processes. On the consumers’ side, some may find the technology too technical and the search for a trusted party to install solar in their homes could prove to be difficult. Still, many of those who have successfully shifted to solar never looked back. In this episode, Rappler environment journalists Jee Geronimo and Iya Gozum talk to business reporter Tatiana Maligro and New Energy Nexus’ country director Brenda Valerio about the developments and challenges in the local solar power industry, and how consumers can make better decisions.
